produce: now on display at Great Falls Library

produce is an art exhibition featuring photographs by Christin Boggs, from the series Cheap Fix, 2009 and Slow & Steady, 2010. A native of Northern Virginia, Boggs has been studying photography since her sophomore year at Langley High School. She received her BFA in photography from George Mason University in 2007, and is completing her MFA in photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her work is centered on the politics of food in the 21st century. Cheap Fix engages in a critique of processed foods, while Slow & Steady documents local, sustainable food production in Rochester, New York.

ArtAwake 2010

I just got back from the very eclectic ArtAwake event in downtown Rochester. The former First National Bank was transformed into a venue packed with food, music, and lots of art. All in all, it was really nice to see so many people coming together for the sake of art and community. Here's my documentation of the artwork up by myself and two of my classmates in the RIT MFA photo program.

Nick Marshall had a series of four images up. It's difficult to tell exactly what the piece looks like from my photo, because the work is so highly reflective.

Fiona Wilson had three images up from her series Macy Parade. Here's Buzz Lightyear!


And here are two images from my thesis project, Slow & Steady. The first is Turnips, Mud Creek Farm. The second is Earth Beds, South Wedge Community Garden.

ArtAwake

On Saturday, April 10th, 2010, from 5pm-2am, ArtAwake will transform the former First National Bank on 35 State Street in Downtown Rochester through a festival of art, music, and much more! There will be art of all forms and special installations, 21 bands and musicians performing on 3 stages, interactive exhibits of all types, a historical exhibit, and a variety of culinary art and other food & drink provided by a variety of local businesses. Tickets are available in advance or at the door, and will gain you unlimited access for the duration of the event along with special discounts at several nearby restaurants.

Slideluck Potshow Comes to Rochester

Last Friday, Jan. 22, Rochester Contemporary hosted a Slideluck Potshow event. The walls of RoCo's gallery were bare, as the Members Exhibition had just come down.

Begun in 2000, when Casey Kelbaugh "invited some friends to his backyard in Seattle for a potluck dinner and art slideshow," Slideluck Potshow has become an international phenomenon, which brings artists and their surrounding communities together for a night of food and art. Sounds like a great idea to me! Images for the slideshow are collected through a call-for-entry and jury selection process and range from emerging to well-established artists. Converge: Upstate Graduate Exhibition

Last night was the opening for Converge: Upstate Graduate Exhibition at Rochester Institute of Technology's School of Photographic Arts and Sciences (SPAS) Gallery. The show includes work from over 50 MFA students at the following Upstate NY schools: Alfred University, RIT, Syracuse University, University of Buffalo, and Visual Studies Workshop.

I entered Kale, an image from my current project, Slow & Steady. The photograph was taken at Mud Creek Farm, and shows kale growing under a material that protects the plant from frost. (To learn a little more about the farm and my current project, check out a blog post I wrote back in December.) Kale was in the "nature" section of the show, in between work by fellow RIT grads Emma Powell and Emily Zeller.

Metamorphosis Art Show: Full Success!!

The art show on Sunday at Willow Restaurant in Ballston, VA, was a delightful experience, in which I met some talented local artists, ate an amazing meal, and sold a few of my framed prints! In total, the artists made about $9,100 from art sales! 10% is being donated to Arlington ArtWorks. Thank you to everyone who came out to the event!

Metamorphosis Art Show 2009

"Food" : Great Falls Studios Group Show

The Great Falls Studios just hung "Food" : a group show at Katie's Coffee House (part of the Old Brogue) in Great Falls, VA . The show, which includes 23 pieces, will be up for the entire month of August. I entered an image from my Still Life series. Though due to the 154 inch size limit, I printed the image at 6"x10" and mounted it in an exquisitely gaudy faux gold frame. Come on out... have some coffee and enjoy some community art!

(The show can still be seen in the evenings, though you'll have to enter through the main Old Brogue entrance)

6x6x2009

Well, now that Rochester Contemporary's 6x6x2009 show is over, I thought I'd spill the beans on which photos were mine: 3 images photographed with a Holga camera of a carousel in D.C., a palm tree shadow in Hawaii, and three birds in San Diego. I guess they weren't too popular since none of them sold, but on the bright side, they were positioned right by two prints by Jerry Uelsmann (notice the two black and white composite prints to the left of mine in the bottom picture). I'm honored to have shared a wall with him.

Artomatic 2009

I am participating in Artomatic for the first time this year. I didn't think I would be able to because of the timing of finishing up classes in Rochester. But as it turned out, I was able to come home just in time for installation, and got one of the last wall spaces. (I was the 1,044th artist!) On Sunday I went to Artomatic, got my wall space assignment and painted the wall. Tuesday I returned and hung 100 Soup Cans, After Warhol, an artist statement, a box for business card/comment book, and the vinyl lettering for my name. Then I volunteered from 5-10 that night. I spent 10 hours yesterday finishing my volunteer shifts (all artists have to contribute 15 hours of work). I did everything from manning the loading dock, to hanging signs, to moving tables. It's been a ton of work, but overall a great experience. Artomatic opens its doors today at noon, and will be open through July 5. See above post for more information. Come find my wall on the 5th floor, by the woman's restroom and the stairs. (In section 15)

An Alumni Show

If you happen to be in Northern VA this Thursday, check out the new George Mason University student/faculty run gallery Point in Space, along with the opening of An Alumni Show. I have to images and one installation up (see posts below)... just a sampling of what I have been working on lately. Unfortunately I can't make it down for the opening, as I have class that afternoon, but the show will be up for at least a month, if not more.
