Mud Creek Farm 2010

This summer, I was a work-trade member at Mud Creek Farm CSA, in Victor, NY. The abbreviation “CSA” stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a type of farm that gathers members who pay a fee at the beginning of the season, then pick up a weekly share of vegetables and possibly meat, cheese, eggs, bread, etc. Through this system, the farmer and the customer work together to ensure that the farmer has an adequate income and that the customer has food provisions for the season. As a work-trader, I worked 4.5 hours every Monday morning, in place of the membership fee. I spent each shift harvesting vegetables for distribution. Last week, the season came to an end, so this is my first Monday off from the farm. With the temperature in the upper 30s, it's nice to be inside! Though I miss the farm and all my friends there. Each week, I photographed my share of vegetables:

October 2010 News and Events

The last few months have been a whirlwind, as I've been busy finishing up my MFA degree at RIT. Here are a few announcements during this exciting time:

• Slow & Steady will be on display through the end of November at The Design Gallery at the RRCDC (1115 East Main St., Door #4, Rochester NY, 14609). Gallery Hours: M-F 9-5, or by appointment. Open First Friday, November 5, 6-9PM.

• Images from the series Digestion and Cheap Fix are currently on view at the Mary Brogan Museum of Art & Science (350 S. Duval St. Tallahassee, FL 32301), included in APPETITE: Expressions of the Politics Encircling Food, coinciding with Grounded, the SPESE 2010 Regional Conference.
  

• A framed print from the series Cheap Fix will be on view and available for purchase at the The 7th Annual Transformer Silent Auction & Benefit Party at The Mexican Cultural Institute (2829 16th Street NW Washington, D.C.). Produce: Full Success

Last week I hosted a closing reception for produce: photographs by Christin Boggs at Great Falls Library. There was a great turnout, considering it occurred at a time when many are away on vacation. It was so great to catch up with longtime friends and to meet new people. Thank you to everyone who came out!

The reception included some local food dishes. Hollin Farms of Delaplane, Virginia, offered delicious peaches, at a discounted price. Potomac Vegetable Farms of Vienna, Virginia, donated a quart of mouth watering 'Juliet' grape tomatoes. I also prepared several dishes, including Baba Ganoush, Chocolate Beet Cake (substituting margarine with applesauce and all-purpose flour with rice flour), and Barbara Kingsolver's Summer Potato Salad, using vegetables grown either in Rochester, New York or the Washington D.C. area. My mom also made a fabulous spinach quiche, using a recipe from The 10 Things You Need to Eat. Compostable tableware came from Sustainable Party, at a discounted price.
